Since its inception, SFHDC’s mission has been to foster stability in the city’s minority communities, primarily focusing on the Southeast Neighborhoods, through the development of affordable housing and facilitation of homeownership.

SFHDC was established in 1988 in response to the steady displacement of minorities, particularly African Americans, in San Francisco, largely due to gentrification and escalating housing costs. Since its inception, SFHDC’s mission has been to foster stability in the city’s minority communities, primarily focusing on the Southeast Neighborhoods, through the development of affordable housing and facilitation of homeownership. More recently, SFHDC has expanded its scope to support the economic revitalization of Third Street Corridor, and other urban minority neighborhoods located in the greater Bay Area. SFHDC’s goal is to create thriving, self-sustainable communities and increase family assets through affordable homeownership. SFHDC is a community-based nonprofit corporation and a HUD-approved local housing counseling agency. Since 1988, SFHDC has offered homeownership services, which now include pre-purchase education and counseling, financial education and foreclosure intervention counseling.
