Our nonprofit members offer workshops and individual counseling on a variety of homeownership and financial topics.

Advance registration is required for all workshops. Registration information is provided on each event listing, and may vary from one class to another. Please confirm the workshop location before you sign up.

Start here, and learn what you need to know to achieve and maintain homeownership in San Francisco.

Homebuyer Education Requirements

Homebuyer Education Requirements effective August 1, 2019:

Effective August 1, 2019, buyers are required to sign up for a free 2-hour orientation* before beginning their 6-hour First Time Homebuyer workshop/s.  This new requirement does not apply to:

·         Buyers who have already received a current and valid Verification of Homebuyer Education Completion

·         Buyers who have completed the 6-hour First Time Homebuyer workshop/s prior to August 1, 2019:

      o   If you fall into this category, you will have 12 months to obtain a Verification of Homebuyer Education Completion. 

*Orientations will be added to our website shortly.

Homebuyer Education Requirements through July 31, 2019:

To apply for a First Time Homebuyer program in San Francisco, adult applicants age 18 and older must complete 8 hours of first-time homebuyer education and receive their First Time Homebuyer Certificate:

6 hours of First Time Homebuyer workshops+        2 hours of individual counseling=        8 Total hours of homebuyer education (with the same counseling agency) to receive your First Time Homebuyer Certificate There are five Homeownership SF counseling agencies that provide HUD approved homebuyer education. You must complete all 6 hours of workshops PLUS your 2 hour counseling appointment at the SAME counseling agency. FIRST: Register for and complete 6 hours of First Time Homebuyer workshops. Workshops are offered in 2, 3, 4, or 6 hour segements. Please note: Orientation and Intro classes do NOT count toward the homebuyer education requirement.

SECOND: Contact the agency that offered your First Time Homebuyer workshops to schedule a 2-hour, one-on-one housing counseling session.

Workshop Types

First-time homebuyer workshop

These workshops are approved by the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Housing and the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency and offer a certificate in homebuyer education. Find out how to buy a home, how much you can afford, what type of home to buy, how to finance a home and how to keep your home over time.

Foreclosure prevention

These workshops help homeowners who are having trouble making their mortgage payments understand their options to preserve homeownership. Find out what to do when you can’t make your mortgage payment and what lenders might be willing to do to help you stay in your home.

Money management

These workshops help you plan financially for a successful transition from renting to homeownership. Find out how to manage your money before and after you become a homeowner.

Homeowners

Educational workshops for homeowners with panels of professionals that offer guidance in sustaining homeownership and guidance in avoiding foreclosure. Workshops are presented by expert community partners such as financial coaches, attorneys, lenders, and the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development.

Rental Readiness

The A-Z’s of renting and review affordable rental payment ratios for your budget, your credit report, the rental application process, the ins and outs of the tenant landlord relationship, different affordable rental housing options.
